Trail Work - 3/13/21

Rerouted a section of low-lying, poorly draining trail on the Flats. Created a more sustainable trail and obscured the old route. Also filled and improved the Bottom Road entrance to the Tears of Tom trail and addressed the persistently muddy entrance to the Bottom Road trail.

Fixed some poorly draining sections of the flats and built some water diversion for the third creek crossing, as well improving the trail bed and armoring the base. Thanks to those that came out on very short notice!

Trail Work - 3/14/20

Began work on the new Blue Trail, connecting near the bottom of the old Jesse's Trail route to the T-Bone Climb fire road, that leads to the Overlook. A lot of rock work was involved, but the results were worth it. Fantastic turnout for our first trail work day of the season.

Trail Work - 11/10/19

Continued the effort started earlier in the spring and as part of a grant from the State to build new and reroute some existing trail in between Bel Air and Harford Rds, on the Baltimore County side. Built a new trail connecting Jesse's Trail with a pass by the Overlook and made good progress on a reroute of the steep and rocky trail that descends from the Overlook down to the Blue Trail. Great turnout for our final trail work day of the season.

Cleared debris and performed cut back on the Horse Poopidy Loop and TNT trails. Built a small reroute around some large downed trees. Big thanks to all that come out!​

Trail Work - 9/14/19

Worked on repairing and creating drains for persistent mud holes along the flats, from Harford to Bottom Rd. Also cut up and removed a very large flotation device that's been alongside the trail. Thank you to those that took the time to come out!​

Trail Work - 8/10/19

Worked on the eroding section of the White trail, just off of Bottom Rd. De-bermed the trail, filled in eroded areas and built multiple rolling grade dips to divert water off the trail. Then built a dirt bridge using existing cut logs over the stream, on the White trail, near the entrance to the A Boy Named Sue trail. Also shaped and rock armored the stream crossing at that location. Huge thanks to all those that came out!​

Trail Work - 7/14/19

Worked on the planned reroute on Amy's Trail, around a persistently muddy section. Also worked on clearing/adding drains for existing mud holes and trimming back overgrowth. Remediated the storm/flood damaged first stream crossing on the Harford to Bottom flats, removing a fallen tree, filling and shaping a sink hole and creating a flat rock bridge across the stream. Also addressed some other mud holes on the flats.  Thanks to the great group that came out!

Trail Work - 5/11/19

Addressed a persistently muddy section on the Jerusalem Mill Trail by creating channels to allow spring flow to drain and used available river stone to create wide stone plateaus for a traversable surface. Light turnout this day. Thanks to those that came out to work.

Trail Work - 4/13/19

Built rock and dirt ramps for the new bridge, a raised, double-wide, plank bridge to traverse the persistently muddy area entering the white trail just off of Harford Road and a rock armored crossing to traverse another persistent mud bog where Jesse's Trail starts on the Bel Air Rd side. Big thanks to those who came out and moved some big rocks.

Trail Work - 3/24/19

Built a new bridge on the new stacked loop trail being put in by the park, between Harford and Bel Air Roads. Transported, cut, drilled and assembled materials to create the robust bridge you see here. A huge thank you to those that put in a lot of hard work.​

Trail Work - 3/9/19

Wow! Just wow! We had over 50 volunteers turn out for our first trail work day of the season! An amazing turnout and a lot was accomplished working on the new stacked loop trail being put in by the park, between Harford and Bel Air Roads. In addition, a rock bridge was built in a persistently muddy section along the flats of that area. A tremendous thank you to everyone who took the time to come out today​!

Trail Work - 11/11/18

We rerouted the steep, eroding trail that descends from the rail bed below Petticoat Junction (between Bottom and Pleasantville Rds). We also improved the stream crossing at the bottom of the descent and improved the poorly draining section of trail just below the slick rock crossing. Huge thanks to all that came out. Special thanks to the members and parents of the Gunpowder Mill Racers mountain biking team that came out to help and who gave the new reroute a thorough testing

We focused on the flats between Harford and Bottom Rds, clearing and improving puddle drains to prevent persistent wet/muddy spots. We also better defined some widened trail sections and performed trimming. Much thanks to all who came out!

Trail Work - 7/14/18

We built a raised turnpike, paralleling the large rock garden on the flats between Harford and Bel Air Rds, offering a more friendly line for beginners that ride this trail. Rock work was done at some crossings and trimming was also performed in the area on the White trail and some of Jesse's Trail. Thanks so much to the group of hard-working volunteers that came out!

Trail Work - 6/9/18

eWe repaired the eroded side trail next to the steps from the Bel Air Rd parking lot. Multiple water diversions were added on and above the trail to prevent further erosion. Trail trimming was also performed on Jesse's Trail, up the Bel Air Rd side and also down the flats from Bel Air Rd toward Harford Rd. A big thank you ​to everyone who came out!

Rerouted a low and poorly draining section and then tackled an ambitious project to create a beginner-friendly line up and over a very rocky area. With Jerry's (some thinking crazy) vision and a determined group of volunteers, the results were outstanding! A hearty thank you to the hard-working group that came out!

Trail Work - 4/14/18

Rerouted the steep, eroding sections of the Little Gunpowder (White) trail, just off of Bottom Road. Created a more sustainable line, better following the contours of that section. Also altered the connection to the A Boy Named Sue trail, for a better transition and drainage. This moved the intersection of those trails away from the prior location and closer to Bottom Road. Thanks to all who came out!​

Trail Work - 3/10/18

Bumped up the upper section of the waterfall trail, to escape the under-eroding ledge that had developed. Built a rock-armored turn at the mid-section, to fill in erosion and provide better flow and made some other minor modifications to both sides of the trail. Created a couple of rolling grade dips along the meadow section, to divert water off of the trail. We had a fantastic turnout and appreciate everyone's help!

Trail Work - 11/11/17

Built a new trail, paralleling Bottom Rd, from just beyond the concrete bridge near the intersection with Guyton Rd to the entrance to the Railroad trail. This new trail will keep hikers and riders safer from fast moving traffic on the road. This trail work day was done in partnership with the GVC and we had a great turnout, despite the frigid temperatures. A big thank you to everyone that came out!​​

Ride - 10/21/17

More than 30 riders came out for the 3rd Annual Memorial Ride for Jesse at Little Gunpowder on Saturday, October 21st. The ride was followed by good food and story telling with friends and family. Always a special event, for a special person. 

Trail Work - 10/14/17

Built a new rock crossing, primarily for hikers/runners, just upstream of the crossing used by cyclists, at the top of the Waterfall Trail. Also cleaned up the cycle crossing. Much appreciation to those that took the time to come out today to move big rocks!​

Ride - 9/30/17

Almost 50 people came out for the MORE Discovery Ride that was hosted at Little Gunpowder on Saturday, September 30th, with several people visiting for the first time. The weather and trails were great and a good time was had by all.

Trail Work - 9/9/17

Built two raised trail beds to eliminate persistent mud holes on the flats near Harford Rd.​ Cleared and created some new drains to prevent water from collecting. Better defined a widened section of trail. Great turnout today!

Trail Work - 8/13/17

Cleared an old narrow gauge rail bed, formerly blazed as a blue trail, from the exit of Railroad Pass 2 to the end of the Rusty Trombone. Built a very small wood bridge on the last dip of the Rusty Trombone descent, due to persistent mud at that spot and also fixed several mud holes on that trail. Thanks so much to those that came out today.​

Trail Work - 7/9/17

Built a reroute around a large and persistent mud hole on the flats and bench cut some of the adjoined trail. Obscured the old trail, performed some rock work on the far side ascent of the Waterfall Trail and performed some additionally bench cutting on Winterfell. A big thank you to our Sunday crew that came out to help!

Built a new, robust trail bridge at the Pleasantville plank. This project was the picture of preparation and teamwork. Volunteers worked like a well-oiled machine to complete this build in just four hours! Huge thanks to the dedicated individuals that took the time to come out today!​

Created a reroute of the nearside ascent of the waterfall trail. Old trail is still accessible, but trail bed is eroding and will deteriorate in time. Much appreciation to the volunteers that took the time to come out today!

Worked on the Little Gunpowder Trail between Harford Rd and Bel Air Rd. Created a small reroute and raised trail bed for a section that has previously flooded and holds water. Modified an eroded, rooty section for better drainage and flow, in addition to some other drains and berms. Big thanks to those that took the time to come out today!

Worked on the Little Gunpowder Trail between Bottom Rd and Pleasantville Rd. Created a reroute to bypass the steep and unsustainable chute that leads into the treacherous rock to rock (aka slick rock) stream crossing. Work included clearing, lopping, grading and some bench cutting. Much appreciation to all those that came out!

Worked on the Flats between Bottom Rd and Harford Rd. Cleared/created drains for several wet spots, eliminated a mud hole by building a raised turnpike at the bottom of a descent, built a reroute around a persistently muddy section. A big thank you to all those that came out!

Great turnout and work day! Built a new contour trail down from the rail bed to the river bank, including a new bridge to span a large gap, rock work and bench cutting. It was a lot of work just getting the materials and tools to the site. A huge thanks to all those that came out!

Rock work between Harford and Bel Air Rds. Improved degraded crossings, built a raised trail bed and worked on the river bank rock garden to make it passable.

Trail Work - 4/16/16

Reclaimed the old trail at the meadow reroute and improved the line and stream crossing at the far end of the meadow section. Improved drainage, rerouted around the tree not far in from the trail head due to an eroding trail bed and cleaned up tire ruts in widened trail areas due to mud in off-season.

High Water in the Park - June 2015

Water ravaged through the park after heavy rains. Reroute created away from the bank that is eroding away.  Trail tread with ankle deep water showed where we needed to cut some drains.
