Trail Work - 3/11/23

A significant project was undertaken to turnpike low-lying sections of the Flats, to make the trail more weather-resistant and usable throughout the year. Work involved placement and securing of lumber and lots of transport of gravel and stone dust. Great volunteer turnout today, with plenty of Gunpowder Mill Racers student-athletes and coaches! We still have work remaining on this effort. Special thanks to Earl Preston Septic and United Rentals for material delivery and equipment donations!

Trail Work - 9/4/22

Built the foundation for a bridge that will span the first stream crossing closest to Harford Road. The foundation is built with all locally sourced, repurposed lumber. This was the first step in a project started by a local Eagle Scout who not only designed the bridge, but crowd sourced over $7,000.00 for the materials to build the bridge. The bridge will be primarily for pedestrian traffic and should be completed this fall.

Trail Work - 8/13/22

Work was done on the new Quarry trail as well as significant trimming on the flats. This project completes the second half of the Quarry trail. The newest sections are a reroute of the fire road / T Bone climb, an existing steep rocky climb. The reroute follows contour lines and makes for a more gradual and sustainable climb up to the Overlook. Thank you to all that came out and worked!

Trail Work - 7/10/22

Continued work on the on the reroute of the fire road section of the Quarry Trail. Work included lots of armoring, rock work, water diversions and turn support. Rerouted section will make a nice addition to a section of trail already known for it's technical aspects. Significant trimming was done on Amy's Trail, the Bel Air Rd side of the Quarry Trail and the old Blue Trail. Great turnout this month. Big thanks to all those that came out and got dirty.

Trail Work - 5/14/22

Cleaned up a washed out section of trail along the white blaze trail off Bottom road. Added several water diversions and created a more sustainable trail. Water will drain along original line and still leave a challenge for those that prefer a more technical climb.

Trail Work - 11/13/21

Great turnout for our final work day of the season! We worked on multiple sites, addressing erosion and adding water diversion at a few points on the climb to the Railroad, also on the initial descent into the lower Trombone. Added an up and over option at the angled tree on Railroad Pass 2, improved the turn on the switchback to the Railroad, filled the entrance to the Bottom Rd trail and rerouted a section of Tears of Tom, away from the eroding stream bed.

Trail Work - 7/10/21

Work included extensive trimming on Jesse's trail, Trombone, Amy's trail, Harford flats, both sides of the Waterfall trail, and various sections from Bottom to Harford Road. Cleaned up the lines on "Breaker of Chains" (First uphill section of Winterfell when going CCW) that had started to erode. Built in grade reversals and water control points making the trail more sustainable and "rolly".

Trail Work - 6/13/21

Completely rebuilt the storm-destroyed first stream crossing on the Flats, coming from Harford Road. Created a rock path through the now deepened stream, reduced the grade of the steep slope and armored it. Built a new, raised line on the far side, around the collapsed section, with multiple earthen water bars for water diversion. Future plans are to reroute the trail and move this crossing to a more sustainable portion of the stream.

Trail Work - 5/8/21

A rain-dampened start allowed us to perform some real-time puddle abatement. Cleared and created drains for poorly draining sections of the Little Gunpowder Trail (aka The Flats). Broadened the narrow, eroding section of trail near the triple creek crossing.

Trail Work - 2018

Seven trail work events this year resulted in a shifted waterfall trail, with some rock armoring in the middle, water diversion in the meadow, a reroute of the white trail, just off of Bottom Rd, a significant effort to create a more beginner-friendly line on the flats between Harford and Bel Air Rds and a raised turnpike as well, repaired the eroded side trail by the steps off of the Bel Air Rd parking lot and rerouted the trail that descends from the rail bed below Petticoat Junction.

Trail Work - 2017

A very active year started with  relocating a  structure to cover and protect a bee hive oven at Jerusalem Mill. Then there was the switchback to the railbed, a waterfall trail reroute, a bridge build to replace the Pleasantville plank, clearing of Railroad Pass 3, some raised trail beds, a new hiker crossing at the top of the waterfall and lastly, the trail that parallels Bottom Rd. There were some big rides, with 50+ people for the MORE Discovery Ride and 30+ for the 3rd Annual Memorial Ride for Jesse.

140 Volunteers, 532 Hours of Work

Trail Work - 2016

Work included inproving the meadow reroute and reclaiming the old trail, rock work and a raised trail bed between Bel Air and Harford Rds, the Trestle Ridge trail and the bridge, Flats work as usual, reroute of the white trail between Bottom Rd and Pleasantville Rd, near the slick rock and a reroute of the Hasselhoff descent.

91 Volunteers, 337 Hours of Work

Trail Work - 2015

Plenty of work was done, but before we really started documenting it! The chicken wire bridge was rebuilt, twice, on The B-Side flats and a muddy stretch of the Flats was rerouted into the meadow, to name a couple.

High Water in the Park - June 2015

Water ravaged through the park after heavy rains. Reroute created away from the bank that is eroding away.  Trail tread with ankle deep water showed where we needed to cut some drains.
